The Norwegian sci-fi action-comedy film Blasted, about Sebastian and his friends who meet for a game of laser tag for Seb's Stag Do, has been released on Netflix. An alien invasion interrupts their game, but luckily, and ironically, the aliens' weakness is lasers. This story is based on a true-life UFO sighting in Hessdalen, Norway. Isn't that crazy? That it is. This movie is two hours of pure insanity. It's captivating and entertaining, and it's difficult to believe it's based on a true story. Blasted 2022 Movie DownPit.
Blasted is directed by Martin Sofiedal, and the screenplay is written by Emanuel Nordrum, who is making his feature film writing debut. This is a fun, cheesy film with a packed, crazy story, good acting, and adequate CGI work. This is a family-friendly film that should not be taken too seriously.
The blubber-looking aliens possess humans and transform them into zombie-like creatures with glowing green eyes. As the group struggles, it's up to Seb and his laser tag high school champion pal to save the day. The exploding green aliens reminded me of Slimer from Ghostbusters, and the master monster alien at the end reminded me of a Monsters Inc./Jabba the Hut hybrid. Creatures that are inventive and bizarre, but not frightening enough to scare children (I don't think.) The stakes are high as we approach the final battle scene, and we are treated to a playful, joyful ending.
Although the film is just under 2 hours long, it moves at a good pace and I wasn't bored or waiting for something to happen. There is a good level of intensity and intrigue, and the enemy is right in our faces, with a confusing reason as to why and how to stop it (at least, that's how I interpret them). We get a glimpse into Norwegian culture, comedy, and some of their histories that we haven't seen before.
Overall, this is an excellent film. The plot is entertaining, and whether you believe this could have happened is up to you, but I won't be returning to those woods anytime soon. I'd recommend it if you enjoy sci-fi, action, and adventure films, as well as something simple and entertaining to watch.
